Where I Work

My psychotherapy practice is based in Churchfield Surgery at Sleights, near Whitby in North Yorkshire. This GP Practice has been my base for the last nine years. As well as seeing private clients, I see people referred by GPs at the practice and people referred to me by the NHS Occupational Health Service.

How I Work

I support and encourage people to make informed choices throughout the therapy process. I use an an open approach with the aim that my clients also become experts, learning about the therapy process and leaving with a range of skills to help them maintain their own psychological health.

Because everyone is unique both in themselves, and in their circumstances, no one approach will suit everyone. The approach I use, Integrative Psychotherapy, draws on (and integrates) a range of approaches including, Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic and Gestalt Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This allows people to benefit from a range of approaches – from open and creative through to structured and cognitive – choosing and using those which best suit their preferences and needs. This is a “best fit”, rather than a “one size fits” all approach.

Extended Skills

I also draw on my experience and training in mindfulness approaches. Mindfulness derived approaches are evidence based and increasingly used throughout the NHS and Mental Health services. As well as enhancing treatments when combined with psychotherapy techniques, mindfulness provides a means for maintaining mental health and wellbeing.

I am also a specialist Occupational Therapist in Neurology Rehabilitation and Therapy (NHS). This work and my previous work as a teacher in special schools, allows me to draw on 30 years experience of working with individuals and groups who have experienced the psychological impact of adverse life circumstances.

Safe and Ethical Practice

I undertaking regular clinical and professional supervision and guidance to monitor my practice and ensure I meet professional and ethical standards. I also undertake regular training to ensure I keep up to date with practice and developments, and can deliver effective and evidence based practice. This is part of meeting the standards for registration and practice and abiding by the ethical guidelines set out by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, The northern Guild for Psychotherapy and Counselling, and the Health and Care Professionals Council.

Fees

My fees are £40 per session – sessions last 50 minutes. Initial meeting and consultation fee is £25.
